EVERYTHING EVERGREENS (FOX
SPORTS WAUSAU-WSAU) – I’ve said before that high school coaches polls – and the
rankings they produce – are meaningless. Most high school coaches don’t
actually see the teams they’re voting on. The polls, especially early in the
season, are based more on reputation/tradition and stats than how a team is
actually playing. The latest evidence is this week’s girls soccer coaches poll,
where the Evergreens were demoted from number-1 to number-2, passed by
Brookfield Central.
The Evergreens are
5-0-2, and the two teams that tied them (Mt Horeb and Arrowhead) are
both state level programs. Brookfield is 4-0-0. A year ago Brookfield was
eliminated in the regional finals by Menomonee Falls, the team Everest beat in
the state semi-finals.
Which team is better?
It’s impossible to say.
But the Evergreens are
the defending state champs, haven’t lost this year, and don’t have a “bad” tie.
Yet enough coaches demoted them and elevated someone else.
Ignore the polls. Who’s
who ultimately gets settled on the field.
Everest soccer hosts
Wausau-East tonight at 7pm in what figures to be a lopsided match. The
Lumberjacks are 2-2-0 this year, but seem to be in a different orbit than the
Evergreens. Rapids and SPASH have soccer teams that are off to good starts this
season. Everest has already handed Rapids a loss, and won’t meet SPASH until
the first week in May.

Logan Langbehn will
probably be the starting pitcher when the Everest baseball team plays Merrill
at Simon Field at 4:30pm this afternoon. Logan is the hottest bat in the
Everest line-up right now (6-for-12) and won the first game he pitched in.
I’m certainly
interested in seeing more of left-hander Tanner Cywinski, who worked three
no-hit innings last Saturday. He’d be available to pitch tomorrow at Lakeland
or Monday at Rhinelander.
The Evergreens are 4-1
this year, and 3-0 in conference.
