EVERYTHING EVERGREENS (FOX SPORTS WAUSAU-WSAU) The Evergreens earned respect with Thursday's win over Antigo. The Red Robins had the most wins in the entire bracket, and were dispatched 5-2 with a rag-tag bunch of pitching and timely hitting. With the Evergreens this season, you never know who will deliver the big hits. And now number-one pitcher Brady Borrell is ready to go again. #2-seed Ashwaubenon won't be taking anything for granted.
Ashwaubenon is probably better than their 20-7 record. Two of their losses are to Stevens Point, and they've split their two meetings with top-seed Bayport. But there are blemishes on their season. They dropped games they should have won against DePere and Notre Dame, and they needed to come from behind to beat Pulaski, 3-2 to advance to Tuesday's game against Everest.
Bottom line: Everest would rather play Ashwaubenon than Bay Port in the sectional semi-finals, and Ashwaubenon would rather play Wausau-West than Everest.
Down the stretch this season coach Dave Langbehn deserves credit for shuffling his line-up and batting order. He's rotated right-fielders and second-basemen looking for the right match-ups, and he's moved his big bats around to make the most of his hot players. Mike Plaza and Mason Hagenbucher are both overdue. Wyatt Brown has heated up. Alex Kell has been streaky. Borrell has been streaky but inconsistent at the plate. How they're shuffled and slotted into the line-up will play a huge role in how the game plays out.
Broadcast time is 12:45pm Tuesday afternoon at Wausau-West's varsity field. First pitch is at 1pm. Once the Evergreens win, they'll play again at 4pm. Both games will be on AM-1390 and FM-93.9, with the podcast postsed at EverythingEvergreens.com.
