EVERYTHING EVERGREENS (Fox Sports Wausau-WSAU) Evergreens baseball coach Dave Langbehn got everything he asked for on opening day. Solid pitching. Error-free defense. Dynamic hitting. The Evergreens were never threatened as they built a 7-0 lead and coasted to a win against Wisconsin Rapids on a cool, windy day at Witter Field.
Mike Plaza looks as if he might be the best natural hitter on the team. He hit two line-drive singles and muscled a double off the left-field wall on a fly. He went 3-of-4 with 2 RBI and 7 total bases. Kyle Zblewski also had a gapping-double and was 2-for-3 for the afternoon.
Junior Austin Solomon may have been the days most pleasant surprise. He came on in relief of starter Brady Borrell in the 4 th inning. He faced seven batters, allowed no hits, striking out four and walking two.
The Evergreens travel to Oconomowoc on Saturday for a triangular against Kenosha-Indian Trails (1:30pm start) and Oconomowoc (4:30pm). Both teams will be tough opponents. Indian Trials opened their season 2-0. Oconomowoc was 17-5 last year, despite opening this season with a 5-3 loss to Waupon on Thursday. Both games will be heard live on Fox Sports Wausau AM-1390 FM-93.9.
Theres rain in the forecast, although it may hold off until the late evening. Colder weather is expected next week. Its unclear if Simon Field will be playable for Tuesdays scheduled game against Medford.
