PREVIEW - DC Everest baseball vs Wisconsin Rapids

by Chris Conley

EVERYTHING EVERGREENS (Fox Sports Wausau WSAU) Two weeks ago I was chatting with Fox Sport Radios Operations Manager Ken Clark and Sales Manager Bob Jung. It was sleeting outside and there was still a lot of snow on the ground. The conversation was about how late the high school baseball season would start this year. Ken thought a week or two late. Bob predicted April 19. I was still optimistic that wed melt a lot of snow and would start on time. Both Ken and Bob owe me lunch.

Todays game against Wisconsin Rapids-Lincoln happened in a roundabout way. This game was supposed to be played at Everest, and on Tuesday the game was going to be cancelled. Simon Field on the Everest campus had a snow-covered outfield and standing water on the base paths. In Wisconsin Rapids, where most of the snow melted a week ago, Witter Field wasnt ready for play either. The game was to be made up later this season.

On Tuesday night came word that Rapids JV field next to the South Wood Park Recreation Center was playable, and the game was on. Then Wednesday morning things changed again with word that the grounds crew had Witter Field ready-for-play. Everest and Rapids will flip-flop homes games, and Rapids will come to Everest on Tuesday, May 6.

Everest and Rapids figure to be evenly matched. DC Everest graduated their two best pitchers from last season, and probably wont be as strong on the mound as a year ago. The teams defense was shaky last season, particularly in the infield, and its unknown whether that will improve this season. But the Evergreens figure to hit and this team will be dependent on outslugging opponents to get its wins.

Last year the Evergreens beat Rapids twice, 6-2 in Schofield and 11-6 at Rapids. The Rapids game was memorable. The Evergreens needed an emergency pitcher after the first inning, still managed to build up a solid lead, and thwarted a Rapids comeback in the 6 th inning on a bases-loaded catch in the left-centerfield gap by Wyatt Brown. It was the Evergreens best defensive play of the season.

Game coverage of this afternoons game starts at 4:15pm on Fox Sports AM-1390 FM-93.9.
