EVERYTHING EVERGREENS (FOX SPORTS WAUSAU-WSAU) - Some odds n ends as we get set for the 2014 high school football opener.
- The season begins Thursday night, with Wausau-East hosting Wisconsin Rapids at Thom Field. It's a Thursday opener because Wausau-West also opens at home, Friday against Marshfield. Wausau-Newman also has a Thursday opener against Thorpe at Stiehm Stadium.
East is probably about the same as last year, where they finished 1-8. Rapids was also a one-win team, but they lost their stud running back in week one and never recovered. East needs to open with a win, because they face tougher opponents (Marshfield and Kimberly) in weeks 2 and 3.
Thursday night marks Tom King's 20th season as the Voice of the Lumberjacks.
Friday's opener between Everest and SPASH is a game of question marks. Last year I thought SPASH's defense looked fabulous in their 21-0 win over the Evergreens... but it sure looked sloppy losing three of their next four games. SPASH has lost a lot of starters. Everest is breaking in an inexperienced quarterback. As with most early-season games with evenly matched teams, little things like turnovers and penalties will be magnified.
You asked for it -- you got it. This season we will be streaming our games at Foxsportswausau.com. You can also hear the games at AM-1390 and FM-93.9, and we'll post the podcasts at EverythingEvergreens.com.
- Because the Brewers and Packers both have Friday night games, the Everest-SPASH game is on tape delay. We should be on-air around 9:30pm. And we'll post the podcast earlier than that. Like many high school football fans, we think it stinks when the NFL schedules pre-season games on Friday nights.
