EVERYTHING EVERGREENS (FOX SPORTS WAUSAU-WSAU) My gut tells me that Everest is better than Merrill, but the scoreboard said otherwise. It was a frustrating Friday night, where Everest got 10 extra base runners via walks and errors but didn't have the timely hitting to bring 'em home. 8 men were left in scoring position in an 8-5 loss.
I thought both pitchers struggled with the cold weather. Sean Luedtke and Auston Solomon issued 7 walks between them. Poor defense also changed the look of the game. An error on what should have been an inning-ending double-play allowed Merrill to score two unearned runs. There was also a strange play on the bases, where Michael Plaza was caught stealing to end the 6th inning. The tying run was at the plate with the score 6-4 at the time. The out literally took the bat out of Kodie Kocher's hands. It was a weird time to run.
These are the kinds of losses that haunt you in the standings later in the year. SPASH and Marshfield appear to be good teams this year. East, West, Merrill and Rapids are not. For Everest to be in the hunt they need to win all their games against the lower-level teams, and they dropped one last night.
Three weeks into the season, we've finally come to our first home game of the year. Appleton-East comes calling for a Saturday doubleheader. The Patriots won their game last night over Oshkosh-West, 7-2, and are 2-4 for the season. Last year, Appleton was 11-11, and lost their first-round playoff game. Both games of today's doubleheader will be on Fox Sports AM-1390 FM-93.9. Our coverage starts at 10:45am.
Temperatures will be in the mid 50s today, but it will be much colder than that at first pitch.
Enjoy the new Simon Field scoreboard. It was installed last week in right-field, and it's a big improvement over the old board with the missing lights.
