WEEK TWO pregame notes: DC Everest vs. Wisconsin Rapids

by Chris Conley

EVERYTHING EVERGREENS (FOX SPORTS WAUSAU-WSAU): Here are my week two game notes for DC Everest vs. Wisconsin Rapids:

  • Someone will go home with their first win. Rapids opened the season with a 19-13 loss to Wausau East. The Evergreens lost to SPASH, 16-12.
  • Both teams couldn't hold 6-0 leads in the second half in week 1. The Evergreens allowed 9 unanswered points in the second half of their game; the Red Raiders allowed 13-unanswered in theirs.
  • I'm curious about Wisconsin Rapids' quarterback Jayson Wiernik. He was hit hard on the last play of the game against East, and walked off the field as if he was injured. Check him out in pre-game warm-ups on Friday night.
  • There's a traditional grass field at Wisconsin Rapids, which will have taken a lot of rain before kickoff.
  • Last year, both teams were reeling from injuries when they met in week two. Rapids was without their leading rusher, and the Evergreens were without starting quarterback Nick Sierakowski. The Evergreens rallied with a game-winning touchdown drive in the closing seconds for a 20-17 win.
  • In last year's game, Wiernik rushed for 272 yards and two touchdowns. He was only 1-of-8 passing.
  • A key point in last year's game was when Wisconsin Rapids settled for a 34-year field goal from Katie Becker.
  • Kyle Zblewski almost busted a return for a touchdown along the far sidelines in the second half. Rapids' kicker made a saving touchdown, meaning Zblewski is one of the few high school football players who can say he was tackled by a girl.
  • Zblewski and Jacob Ringwelski each had three catches in last week's game. Ringwelski outfought two defenders for one of his catches, which everyone loved to see. The receiver who draws the lesser of Rapids' two defensive backs could be set up for a big night.
  • The Evergreens were a running-back-by-committee team last week, with 7 different backs carrying the ball. It will be interesting to see if some have moved ahead of others on the depth cart for week two.
  • Before last year's win, Rapids had won three straight against the Evergreens.
  • Over the last ten years, Rapids leads the series 5 to 4.
  • Both teams begin divisional play next week. Everest will play at Appleton-North. Rapids will play at Oshkosh-North.
  • Tonight's game is on tape-delay starting at 9:30pm after the Wausau-East at Marshfield game at 7pm. Podcasts will be posted around 8pm. Our streaming of the games, which is coming soon, is not ready yet. I'm told there's still a set-up issue with our service provider. We'll have scores at FoxSportsWausau.com .
