The Wausau East Lumberjack baseball team beat Wausau West 4-2 on Thursday to take home the Carp Cup for the first time. The two teams have played for the traveling trophy for a number of years and this is the first time East has won it. It's named for long-time Wausau youth baseball coach Ron Carpenter who is also a member of the Central Wisconsin Hall-Of-Fame.
East fell behind 1-0 in the first inning but it could have been worse. Cam Gruetzmacher made a diving catch on a Chris Clementi line drive in right field and the Lumberjack infield turned a 6-4-3 double play with two men on.
East tied the score in the 3rd inning on a Ben Schubring rbi single. West came right back and scored a single run in the 4th...but East responded with a 3 run 4th inning to take the lead for good. Jordan Heiting had a rbi double and Schubring added a 2-run single. Schubring finishied the day 3-3 with 3 rbi's.
Luke Strick pitched the complete game win, beating the Warriors for the 2nd time this season. He gave up 2 runs (1 earned) on 7 hits with 2 strikeouts and 2 walks.
East improved to 5-7 overall an 2-4 in the Valley. They travel to DC Everest on Friday.
