OPINION: Your guest host

NEWS BLOG (WSAU) If I could pick from all the on-air jobs at the radio station, I’d pick the one I already have. I enjoy being WSAU’s morning news anchor. I like telling people what’s going on. Putting together newscasts each morning is something I look forward to.

That said, doing something different is always nice for a change.

On Wednesday I’ll be guest-hosting WSAU Feedback from 9am to 11am. That’s because Pat Snyder is scheduled for vacation, and Tom King’s American Legion baseball team has a morning game in the state tournament. I only guest-host the program only four or five times a year, between Christmas and New Years when most of our staff is on vacation. So this will be a treat for me.

I hosted my own talk show many years ago in Connecticut. “Chris Conley’s Newsmakers” was on Monday through Friday from 3 to 4pm. It was not my favorite hour of the day. The show was an interview format, and it depended on getting a big guest. I’d have arguments with my producer over what constituted a good guest instead of a ‘good enough’ guest. We also interrupted the show every ten minutes for traffic and weather reports. It was disjointed and scattered. I much preferred doing newscasts, which took up the rest of my day in the late morning and early afternoon.

But on Wednesday there’s a lot to talk about, and I’m looking forward to it. I’d like to talk about the Tea Party movement, and something that’s making me uncomfortable in one of the local political races. And I’m looking forward to taking your phone calls. I don’t get to guest-host very often, so I’ll try to make the most of it.
