NEWS BLOG (WSAU) We’re getting ready for a second week of high school football. For people who complain that some high school football games just aren’t competitive, that certainly wasn’t the case in week one.
D.C. Everest threw two incomplete passes into the end zone from 10-years and 15-yards on the game’s final plays in their 34-30 loss to Marshfield. Wausau-East rallied in the second half after returning a kick for a touchdown to upset Wisconsin Rapids, 25-14. Even Wausau-West gave SPASH a fight before succumbing 28-18.
All of our area teams are facing tougher opponents in week 2. Appleton-North will be looking for revenge against Everest after being knocked out of the playoffs by the Evergreens last year. Kimberly may be the toughest team in the northern division—they play Wausau East tonight.
On a personal note, the game-night environment is Steim Stadium is the best in the state. I’m looking forward to the play-by-play of tonight’s game on Fox Sports 1390 at 6:45pm. The East-Kimberly game follows the Everest broadcast on tape-delay.
Here are this week’s high school picks.
While I’d love to see an upset, Appleton-North is likely to beat Everest
Wausau-East would give Kimberly a better game if they met later in the season
Wausau-West has a chance to beat Appleton West.
Marshfield looks good again this year; they’ll beat Oshkosh North
Wisconsin Rapids should win their home-opener against Fond du Lac
I like SPASH on the road to beat Oshkosh-West.
I think Merrill will win over Medford
Mosinee is sitting on a road-win against Rhinelander
Rapids-Assumption over Thorp
Stevens Point-Pacelli over Amherst
Last week: 8-2
