Hindsight? What hindsight? Conservatives were screaming at him to do what he's now saying he should have done. As the listener who shared this with me put it:

How come everybody else knew what needed to be done except Boehner?  What an idiot.

Every conservative talk show host in America was warning Boehner that bending over on taxes would leave the party impotent. That's exactly what has happened. They did just cave on a core belief, they caved on the core belief! Here's Boehner:

“Looking back, what I should have done the day after the election was to make it clear the House has passed a bill to extend all of the current tax rates, the House has passed a bill to replace the sequester with cuts in mandatory spending, and the Senate ought to do its work,” Boehner said. “We’re ready, able and willing to work with the Senate as soon as they produce a bill. It should have been what I said. You know, again, hindsight is 20-20.”

Of course, that's not what Boehner did. He instead made the major concession on taxes. Hindsight is only hindsight when nobody thought of it at the time. EVERYBODY but Boehner knew was right at the time. To quote Bruce Willis in the original and best Diehard movie: "Welcome to the party, pal."
