Amazing Surgery

Posted by Seth Mela on

68-year-old Pamela Lawson of Kansas City has liver cancer, and has been first on the transplant list at the University of Kansas hospital since July.

--On September 22nd, Pamela got a call from the hospital telling her that a donor liver had been found.  But there was one problem . . . the liver was too BIG to fit in her body.

--So doctors decided to CUT the liver in HALF.  Pamela got one lobe of the liver, and another woman got the other lobe.  (--She doesn't want her identity released . . . but she's from Kansas and in her 60s.)

--The transplant was a first for the Kansas City area . . . and splitting a liver transplant between two adults was only done about 200 times nationwide last year.  One of the doctors said, quote, "Transplant surgery is sometimes like MacGyver surgery.  You make it work."

--Both women are recovering from the procedure.

Here's amazing video of the harvesting of the donor liver... WARNING: It's Bloody funny.
