The Wisconsin Woodchucks made the playoffs last night with a 6-0 whitewash of La Crosse at Athletic Park. And, as with any playoff clinching win, the team got some clutch performances that lead to the victory. Andrew Klausmeier, who began the season as a starter and struggled, made his first start in awhile and threw a beauty...6 shutout innings. He also got out of a jam at one point by pulling the old "fake to third, throw to first routine to pick off a runner and end an inning. Mitchell Beacom also came up big throwing 3 shutout innings to close out the victory. Robbie De La Cruz hit a two run homer and Brock Stassi climbed the fence and took a home run away from Mick Doyle of the Loggers when the game was still in doubt. The Eau Claire Express has been the best team in the league this season but they have lost some key players for the playoffs who have returned to school. The Chucks are in position to make a run at the Northwoods League Championship which they havent won since 2003. It starts tonight in Eau Claire and you can hear the game on Foxsports 1390 WRIG at 615. There will be a home playoff game tomorrow (Wednesday) night at Athletic Park.
The Brewers failed to sign their number 1 pick in this years draft on Monday. High school pitcher Dylan Covey was diagnosed last week with Type 1 diabetes and his family decided to have him learn how to live with the affliction while pitching in college at San Diego. The Brewers will recieve a compensation pick in next years draft.
If you were US Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin would you make Tiger Woods a captain's pick for the competition? Woods failed to qualify for the team this year but I would think that Pavin will use one of his captain's pick to put the worlds number 1 player on the squad. There is still some time for Woods to find his game in time for the Ryder Cup week in Wales.
Baseball stats of the week...courtesy of Jayson Stark of ESPN. Mariano Rivera of the Yankees gave up a lead-off triple to Elvis Andrus of Texas last week and then stranded him at 3rd. Big deal you say? Well, in Rivera's entire career...when he's allowed the tying run in a game to reach third with nobody out...the other team has NEVER gotten the run home. Amazing!
Also the Cubs had an interesting inning last week. They sent 8 hitters to the plate and none put the ball in play. It went: walk, strikeout, walk, walk, HBP, strikeout, walk, strikeout.
The Wausau Legion Baseball team will celebrate their fine season one more time with the team banquet tonight at the Wausau Legion Clubhouse. Songs of The Day (from my I-pod)
Getting Better-The Beatles (1967) from the classic Sgt Pepper Lp comes this seemingly uplifting ditty with a few dark undertones. the title came from a line used regulary by Jimmie Nichol who was a stand-in drummer for the band on their 1964 tour of Australia.
Ghetto Child-Spinners (1973) One of the many hits from their debut Lp on Atlantic. TThey left Detroit for Philadelphia and found the Gamble-Huff magic. Often called "The birth of the Philly sound".
