Outside of a Stanley Cup Game Seven can anything match an Olympic Gold Medal game for hockey fans? Fans got what they wanted when both Canada and Team USA advanced yesterday and will play Sunday afternoon for the gold. I don't think the American win over Canada earlier in the week will matter much. It's going to come down to the goaltenders and I'll put my money on Ryan Miller. And let's stop the talk I'm hearing about how somehow this will be as big as 1980's Miracle on Ice if the Americans win. Nonsense. The 1980 wins over the Soviets and Finns for the upstart college boys was one of the greatest (if not THE greatest sporting moments EVER). The place and time as well as the participants made sure of that.
Closer to home the Badger hockey team clinched home ice advantage in the WCHA playoffs with a Friday night win over Michigan Tech. The Pointer hockey team continues their tournament run today vs St Norberts.
In the high school ranks, the Central Wisconsin Sorm is headed back to the State Tournament. they beat Eau Claire last night 2-0. They have not been scored upon in the playoffs. Kind of hard to lose if you don't let the other team score.
Get to Greenheck early this afternoon as Wausau West will play Stevens Point with a trip to the Boys State hockey tournament on the line. gametime 2pm.
