Is your bracket messed up already? I would imagine so. even if you picked Murray State to upset Vanderbilt which was a trendy pick...I doubt you also had Ohio beating Georgetown....Washington beating Marquette.........St Marys beating Richmond....or Old Dominion beating Notre Dame. I had BYU and Norhern Iowa to win but those were upsets too. It's the madness of March...how will Day 2 matchup?
The Wausau Newman girls scored more point from the foul line than from the field and held off Rapids Assumption. The Cardinals had a 24-1 advantage from the free throw line in the win. They'll play Marion saturday with a trip to state on the line. Wittenberg/Birnamwood also advanced, beating Medford. they take on Altoona on Saturday night. Wausau West squares off with Marshfield tonight at West...this should be an excellent game...both teams are experienced, talented and deep.
The Pointer men's basketball team plays in the D-3 Final Four tonight in Salem Virginia. They take on Randolph-Macon. I talked with Pointer coach Bob Semling earlier this week and asked him about the state of D-3 basketball and he made an interesting comment. He was a D-1 assistant for 8 years and he thinks that the teams in this final four and the Pointer teams in their best years could compete in a good D-1 mid-major conference. He cited the 2005 season when they played Marquette (who had Steve Novak and Travis Diener) and played them close to the final couple of minutes. The Pointer basketball program has been excellent for a long time as Dick Bennet, Jack Bennet and now Semling continue to preach the fundamentals...good D...don't turn the ball over and balanced scoring. It works!
The Brewers struck out 16 times last night and lost to Texas 6-4. Manny Parra got knocked around. Trevor Hoffman will make his spring debut today against the Angels. Jeff Suppan is also scheduled to pitch (ugh).
Hope to see you this weekend at the WSAU Sport, Rec & Home & Garden Show at Marathon Park in Wausau . There will be something for everyone including Packer legend Dave Robinson. It starts Friday at 4 and runs through Sunday at 3. and the best part....it's free!
Songs of the Day (from my I-pod)
Even Cowgirls Get The Blues-EmmyLou Harris (1979) from a fabulous album called "Blue Kentucky Girl" comes this Rodney Crowell tune.
Even Now-Bob Seger (1982) Seger kept rockin into the 80's...an underappreciated gem from "The Distance"
