Like the first Led Zeppelin song (which you can hear below) the Wisconsin football teams gave us both this weekend. From the high of the Badgers hammering Ohio State to the low of the Packers losing another OT game, fans were whipsawed through all the emotions. It was 1981...the last time Wisconsin knocked off a Number 1 team when they beat Michigan. Not many were giving them a chance against the Buckeyes even though the game was played at a packed Camp Randall. They broke the Buckeyes back early jumping on them for a quick 21 and held off a second half comeback with some key defensive stops. My oldest son was able to attend the game with a bunch of his buddies. I know he will remember it for a long time...just as I remember a bunch of Badger Saturdays with my friends years ago.
With the win Wisconsin moved up to 10 and 11 th in the two major polls and 13th in the BCS standings.
Now, What's wrong with the Packers? In my opinion the injuries are the difference. Even with a dubious penalty on the punt which gave the Dolphins a chance to score the key touchdown...the Packers battled back to tie it and send it to OT. But the battered defense without Matthews, Pickett, Burnett, Chillar, Poppinga, etc couldnt get much pressure on Chad Henne...and the offense couldnt convert on third down earlier in the game when they could have given the Packers some breathing room. They are expected to get some of these defensive guys back this week and also traded for safety Anthony Smith from Jacksonville yesterday. Don't look now but Brett Favre is coming to town.
Not even a sore achilles tendon could slow down Ashley Eckhoff on Saturday as she led the Wausau East Lumberjack girls cross country team to a Wisconsin Valley Conference Title. She set a personal record of 14 minutes, 21 seconds which beat the second place runner by 27 seconds! East's Katelyn Stine, who had won the previous two conference meets came in 3rd.
Meanwhile Stevens Point made it 23 boys titles in a row. 23 conference titles in a row for Spash! That's incredible.Coach Don Behnke and his Panthers have won 32 of the last 33 Valley boys CC titles. Sophomore Michael Larson won the race.
Songs of the Day (from My I-pod)
