The US Mens basketball team was tested on Sunday but prevailed over Spain 107-100 to win gold at the Olympics. It was a very entertaining game although the constant whistles from the refs made it very disjointed. It also high-lighted that Lebron James is the best basketball player in the world. He joined Michael Jordan as the only players to win NBA title, NBA MVP, NBA Finals MVP and Olympic gold in the same year.
The game also marked the swan-song for Coach Mike Krzyzewski as he is stepping down as national coach. Coach K has certainly turned around the fortunes of Team USA in the last few years and it will be interesting to see who picks up the mantle. Also this marked the final Olympics for Kobe Bryant and probably some of the other players. There is talk that Team USA may go to a younger type team the next time around...don't worry, the cupboard is still loaded with young talent like Kevin Durant and Kevin Love.
The Packers made it official over the weekend...signing Cedric Benson to a league minimum contract. That could be one of those signings that becomes huge...especially if he has anything left in the tank. The Packer running game has struggled and is banged up as well.
The Woodchucks had another walk-off win last night as they broke a six game losing streak in fabulous fashion at Athletic Park. They rallied from a 10-1 deficit to beat madison 11-10 in 10 innings. A seven run eighth inning was highlighted by a Brooks Braga grand slam and an Eric Filia-Snyder solo homer. Wausau EAst grad Ryan Zweck didnt get the win but he pitched six solid innings of relief to allow the Woodchucks a chance to rally. Playoff baseball begins tonight with a 6:35 game vs La Crosse at Athletic Park. You can hear the game on Foxsports 1390 at 6:15.
One lowlight for the Chucks this week was the boorishness of Joe Serrano. The University of Arkansas player went home with no warning on Saturday and has left the team very shorthanded in the infield. He then had the audacity to tweet that you couldnt pay him enough to return to Wisconsin. My thought is that any player who leaves his team on the eve of the playoffs without warning or permission is a jack-ass who you wouldnt want back anyway. It strikes me that Serrano is one of those players who think's he's better than he is....good riddance.
The TV show "Hell On Wheels" is back on AMC. It's a fictional re-telling of the bulding of the transcontinental railroad. My DVR is getting a workouts on Sunday nights.
How many entertainers could get a crowd chanting along years after he died? How bout Freddie Mercury at the Closing Ceremonies last night? And Brian May kicked all kinds of ass as well.
Songs of The Day (from my I-pod)
Just Like This Train-Joni Mitchell (1974) from the timeless "Court & Spark" How many songwriters have tried to write songs while killing time on a train? None have done it better than this..
Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues-Bob Dylan (1965) another classic track from "Highway 61 Revisited" filled with the literary references that made him famous. It's been done by many other people but the original is still the best
