Despite the hot temps it's time for the boys of autumn to return. High school football cranks up tonight around the state of Wisconsin and there are some excellent non-conference matchups to open the season. You will be able to hear a doubleheader every Friday night on Foxsports1390 and the games will also be posted as podcasts on foxsports1390.com and wsau.com.
Tonight the Wausau East Lumberjacks will unveil their new spread offense against last years state D-1 runner-up Wisconsin Rapids. I'll have the game from Thom Field as Game 1 of our twin-bill. That will be followed by DC Everest at Marshfield, a game that has become an excellent rivalry.
Other games tonight include Wausau West at Stevens Point, Mosinee at Witt/Birn, Menominee at Merrill, Pittsville at Marathon, Chequamegon at Edgar, Loyal at Athens, Phillips at Stratford.
The Packers took care of business as the first team looked better. Cedric Benson looked good in limited time. He may be the rushing answer the Packers have been looking for.
How about this for a concert? A bunch of friends of the late Levon Helm are getting together for a tribute concert. Joe Walsh, Gregg Allman, Mavis Staples, Bruce Hornsby, John Hiatt, John Mayer, Warren Haynes, Dierks Bentley, Eric Church, Marc Cohn, Patty Griffin & Jorma Kaukonen along with other "surprise guests" It's happening on October 3rd at the Izod Center in East Rutherford NJ.
Speaking of John Hiatt I will be seeing him this weekend as he plays the Big Top Chatuaqua in Bayfield on Saturday night. If you havent seen a show under the big blue tent you really should check it out. All summer long big names and other fine musicians from around the country visit the Lake Superior area and lay down a musical bakdrop to all of the secnic beauty...plus dinner at Maggies is always a treat. The season is winding down fast but you can keep track of all of the shows for next year at their website www.bigtop,org
Songs of The day (from my Ipod)
Kashmir-Led Zeppelin(1975) from the classic "Physical Graffiti" it showed the band at the height of their powers...the hypnotic guitar riff and Bonzo's drumming combined with Page's ethereal voice...man what a sound
Katherine of Oregon-Al Stewart (2005) from an underrated album called "A Beach Full Of Shells" comes this tune about aging. Stewart tours with an excellent guitar player named Dave Nachmaninoff. The sound on this isnt great but I like this song so here it is. Plus it's a great play on words.
