Power Shift

Posted by Tom King on

It's well known on many college campuses that the football coach has more power than almost anyone...including the University President and certainly more than most Athletic Directors. The Big Ten Conference is considering changing that balance of power in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandel. There is a report out from something called the The Chronicle Of Higher Education, which obtained an 18 page document which proposes that Big Ten Commisioner Jim Delany would have the authority to sanction universities. The sanctions would include penalties, suspensions and yes, even termination of school employees. Giving the conference commissioner power like this would certainly mitigate some of situations like Penn State, where the people in a position to end Sandusky's disgusting reign of terror turned a blind eye to "protect" the reputation of the school and the football program. Would it be too much power?

Wisconsin will play BYU in football. The Cougars will come to Madison next season. The date in Provo is yet to be determined. The Badgers begin training camp on August 6th.

Badger running backs Montee Ball and James White are both on the watch list for the Doak Walker Award which goes to the top running back in the country.

A good start to a re-hab assignment for injured Brewer catcher Jon Lucroy. He went 2-3 with a doule for the Wisconsin Timber rattlers last night. He will play for them this weekend before heading to AAA Nashville to finish re-hab and get back to the Brewers.

The Colts signed Andrew Luck to a contract yesterday. Expect more top rookie signings as training camps begin opening next week .

A gut punch game for the Wausau Legion Bulldogs on Thursday night. Post 10 had taken the lead in a 1-1 game with a suicide squeeze bunt by Ryan Zweck and an RBI single by Cole Nelson in the 8th inning of their game with Stevens Point. But they couldnt get the three outs in the ninth to nail it down. The Dogs made three errors in the inning as Post 6 rallied for a 4-3. Wausau had the tying run on third and the winning run on second in the bottom of the ninth but couldnt cash them in.

The Woodchucks are back home tonight after dropping their matchup with the Mallards in Madison 10-0. The Chucks are still 2 games up as they head home to take on eau Claire tonight. You can hear the game on Foxsports1390

Songs of the Day   (from my I-pod)

Jump-Van Halen (1984) Their only #1 song. Eddie's solo was two different takes spliced together.

Jump, Jive & Wail-Louis Prima (1956)  He first wrote and performed the song in 1939 but it's his irresistable 50's version that I've included here...featuring the fabulous Sam Butera & The Witnesses backing him up. They along with Keely Smith were a huge Vegas draw at the Sahara and later the Desert Inn thru the 50's . Brian Setzer did an excellent version of this in the 90's
