It was a win and a loss for the NFL yesterday. The win was a special master ruling in favor of the league..saying that commisioner Roger Goodell does have the power to suspend the four players caught up in the New Orleans Saints bounty program. That group includes new Packer Anthony Hargove. The NFl players association plans an appeal, saying that the new collective bargaining agreement doesnt allow punishment for offenses committed before the agreement was in place.

The loss was the decision to stop bargaining with their game officials on a new contract. They have decided to hire replacement refs. Whether this is a bargaining technique to get concessions or they really plan to go into the season with an entire staff of new refs remains to be seen...but it will really be troublesome if games this fall are decided by blown calls because every official on the field isnt up to speed with NFL players. For a league that has boat loads of money flowing in...it would seem a no-brainer to get this done...but then brains have never been in huge supply in ownership suites of the major sports in this country.

A thrilling win for the Woodchucks over La Crosse  last night. After blowing a one run lead in the top of the ninth...they rallied to win on Chevy Numata's base hit through a drawn in infield in the bottom of the ninth. The two teams play again tonight...I'll be in the booth with Jim Sannes for the broadcast following the DC Everest game on Foxsports1390.

If you want to play hooky today ...its sectional day in high school baseball. DC Everest is one of the sites and there should be three really good games there today. First up is Pulaski and Bayport at 1...Everest play Ashwaubenon at 4 with the winners meeting at 7 tonight for a trip to state. You can hear the Everest game on Foxsports1390.

Songs Of The Day   (from my I-pod)

Blues In The Night-Mel Torme (1941) written by Harold Arlen & Johnny Mercer...legend has it that they called Margaret Whiting with the song and she told them to bring it over and play it for her dinner guests...which were Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney & Martha Raye. They all loved it and Torme made it part of his usual repitoire. He did a fabulous version with the Buddy Rich big band on a late 70's lp but here is a live verion from the early 80s that aint to shabby. Torme passed away 13 years ago today.

Different Worlds-Maureen McGovern (1979) Remember when tv shows had theme songs with lyrics and they actually became hits on the radio? This is from a show called "Angie" with Donna Pescow & Robert Hays. McGovern had a huge hit with the theme from "the Poseiden Adventure" earlier in the 70's  and later had a long career singing show tunes in cabarets and theaters all over the country.
