Free Agent Scamble Begins

Posted by Tom King on

Three Milwaukee Brewers filed for free agency Monday...the first day players were eligible to file. Alex Gonzalez, Shawn Marcum and Francisco Rodriguez are all not expected to return to the Brewers. Last week Milwaukee Brewer owner Mark attanasio dispelled the rumor that the team may go after free agent outfielder Josh Hamilton. He said the Brewers led the National League in homers and didnt need another bat. He said the priority this off-season will be to fix the bullpen. It's nice to have an owner with not only deep pockets but an understanding of the game and the ability to keep himself from throwing money at every shiny object that comes along. Rebuilding a bullpen won't be splashy or sexy but if the Brewers want to contend next season its a must.

So will it be Danny O'Brien or Curt Phillips? Both will work with the first team offense during the bye week. We have seen O'Brien and in my opinion he's not the answer. Give Phillips a shot against Indiana and see what you have.

The NBA regular season begins tonight and its going to be an interesting one. Ray Allen joins the Heatand that team is going to be tough to beat in the East. Some pundits have Milwaukee missing the playoffs...they are giving New York, Brooklyn and Philly alot of love...I think the Bucks improved themselves (especially inside) to return to the playoffs this season. Out west the Thunder will look to repeat although the Lakers will have something to say about it. If they can stay healthy. Kobe is already nursing a sprained foot and Steve Nash is no spring chicken. Plus the Lakers bench is not very good.

The Bucks begin on Friday against Boston

Lots of good new music out from old friends...I've been listening to 'Sunken Condo's from Donald Fagen all week...good stuff. Today Neil's youngs new album with Crazy Horse "Psychedlic Pill" is out. The prolific Young just released his album of folk covers "Americana four months ago. These songs are longer, jam type material.

And the new documentary of Levon Helm is heading to theaters soon. Since it wont come here we will have to watch for "Aint In It For My Health" when it hits DVD or appears on cable.

Some musical birthdays today...Grace Slick is 73...Otis Williams (Temptations) is 71...Tim Schmidt (Poco, Eagles) is 65...and legendary Motown songwriter Eddie Holland is 73. Here is some of their work

White Rabbit-Jefferson Airplane (1967) Slick was hot and a little scary and man what a voice

Temps vs Tops!

Rose Of Cimaron-Poco (1976) one of their classic gems...nobody can sing high harmony like Schmidt
