Andy Roddick was never the best tennis player of his generation. He had the misfortune of playing at the same time that Roger Federer was becoming the best player ever. He also had to contend with Rafeal Nadal and Novak Djokovic as they rose to prominence. Roddicks career came to an end yesterday as he lost to Juan Martin Del Potro at the US Open. He had announced his retirement last week. But don't feel bad for Andy Roddick. Roddick was the best American male player for many years, almost single handedly since the glory days of Connors, McEnroe and Agassi. He also is the last American male to win the US Open which he did back in 2003. Plus he gets to go home to Brooklyn Decker.
Rickie Weeks has repaid Ron Roenicke for the confidence that the Brewer skipper showed him during his early season slump. Weeks has shown that he can still be a productive major league hitter and still has a place in the Brewer plans at least until Scooter Gennett is ready. Weeks had two homers and 4 rbis last night as the Brewers beat the Marlins . Its a day game today on WSAU at 11:05. They are still hanging around the fringes of the wildcard chase.
Also Hunter Morris was named Milwaukee's Minor Leaguer of the year after a huge year with AA Huntsville. The first baseman his 303 with 28 homers and 113 rbis. He was also named the Southern Leagues MVP earlier this week.
Did anybody expect the Cowboys to upset the Giants last night? Looks like it will be another unpredictable NFL season.
Watched an interesting documentary on John Mellencamp which is airing on Showtime. It follows John on a tour with Bob Dylan & Willie Nelson from 2009 in which he also stops at various historic locations (Sun Studios, the hotel room where Robert Johnson recorded) to record his album "No Better Than This" I hadnt heard the music from this album before but I'm definitly getting it now. It was recorded using an old Ampex reel-to-reel and one microphone so all the musicians had to gather around and play together just like they did it back in the day. The album is filled with new tunes that sound great. Mellencamp has always been a bit of a rebel and it seems he wants his music to escape the slick artifice of popular music and regress to an earthy, almost organic type of musical communicating. I love this stuff. He sounds like John Prine and the singing and playing is really good. Check it out. The film was made by a father & son with no training and the rawness of it is interesting too.
Here are a couple of tunes from that album
