Staying Power

Pete Townsend wrote the classic line 'hope I die before I get old" in the Who song "My Generation" back in the mid 60's. He is undoubtably re-thinking that sentiment now and with the aging of rock's pantheon so are we fans.

Case in point...Bob Dylan. Today marks the release of "Tempest", Dylan's 35th album release and this year marks the 50th anniversery of his latest. Now many if not most of the musicians who were releasing stuff 50 years ago have been relegated to the oldies circuit or are playing their old hits over and over again (not that there is anything wrong with that...I enjoy a nostalgic walk back thru time as well as anyone)...but Dylan has released four of his strongest albums in his 60's and early 70's. This run which began with 'Time Out Of Mind" in 1997 and included "Love & Theft", "Modern Times" and "Together Through Life", while maybe not surpassing his run of classic Lps in the mid 60's, certainly is right there with some of his best work. Of course the voice is not what it was...he sounds more like Louis Armstrong at times than himself...but the songs...oh the songs. Nobody paints word pictures and images like Dylan. The tunes I've heard off the new record are once again lyrical masterpieces including the title track which revisits the Titanic disaster. there is also a tribute song to John Lennon. The music is tight as you would expect from his backing band which has been on tour with Dylan for years.

You can bet I'll be adding this to my I-pod today and hoping it isnt his last. Dylan is back on the road next month with his excellent band and joined by former Dire Straits frontman Mark Knofler.

Don't look now but the Brewers are only 5 games back in the wild card chase. The bad thing though is the amount of teams that are right there as well. They would have to pass the Dodgers, Pirates and Cardinals to get the 2nd wildcard, and the Phillies are also five back. It's not impossible but tough. If nothing else, they made the final month of games interesting when nobody thought that was going to happen.

The first week of NFL games are in the book after last nights wins by San Diego and Baltimore. The Packers schedule is certainly not run-of-the-mill here in the early going. After playing last Sunday, they host Chicago on Thursday night and then dont play again until Monday the 24th. After that it's all Sunday games although three of them will be at night.

Of course we cannot let today pass without remembering the horrible day 11 years ago when life changed forever in this country. Lives are still being impacted everyday. Bring our soldiers home now! They have done their job.
