Green Bay Factories Fare Better Than Most

by Jerry Bader

This Journal Sentinel piece pointsout that Northeast Wisconsin in general (although I've never understood including Sheboygan in NE Wisconsin, it's East Central) and Green Bay in particular, have a particularly strong manufacturing employment base. The average for U.S. cities for those working in manufacturing is 11%, in Green Bay it is 19%

But the most important part of this piece is how education for those interested in getting into the skilled trades may be lagging. Manufacturers have said they could expand employment, if they could find qualified workers. These skills and professions need to be de-stigmatized and we need to get away from the "everybody needs to go to college" notion. I thought this was one of the most important parts of Governor Walker's State of the State address.
