I wasn't a race fan growing up. Oh, I knew who Richard Petty was...and I watched the Daytona 500 and Indy 500 every year. But local, short-track racing didn't interest me and I never made it out to State Park Speedway on Thursday nights. But it was impossible to grow up in Central Wisconsin and not know who Dick Trickle was. Before his name became a running gag on Sportscenter, Trickle was a a short-track legend in the Midwest amassing around 1000 wins in feature races. And if your track had guys like Trickle dueling with the Tom Reffners and the Marv Marsofkas of the world...you would fill the bleachers.
Trickle was found dead Thursday of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in a cemetary in Boger City, NC. He had live in North Carolina for quite awhile after making his run on the NASCAR circuit in the late 80's and early 90's. Trickle won only one race on the big circuit but he was named Rookie Of The Year in 1989 after six top five finishes and nine top 10's. But it was his success on the short-tracks all over the Midwest and his mentoring of younger drivers that cemented his legacy.
Hopefully he has found peace from whatever demons led him to this final checkered flag.
The Pointer baseball team is the only undefeated team left in the D-3 regional at Whitewater. they beat the Warhawks last night 7-6 in 8 innings and will face the winner of a loser out game between Whitewater and St. Scholastica tonight at 6pm.
The Brewers continue stumbling along. They lost 3 of 4 in Pittsburgh including last night 7-1. Now the offense can't score runs and the starting pitching is still pretty bad. hard to turn things around this weekend as they head to St. Louis beginning tonight.
Happy Birthday to Spurs star Tony Parker who celebrated last night by leading his team to the Western conference finals for the second straight year.
Songs of The Day (from my I-pod)
Love My Way-Psychedelic Furs (1982) one of the great "New Wave" tunes of the 80's
Love Needs A Heart-Jackson Browne (1977) from "Running On Empty" Browne's unique take on a "live" album comes this beautiful break-up song. It must have pissed other songwriters off when they listened to him crank these songs out. I know he lived alot of heartache but if the result is stuff like this, it may be worth it
