Another Coaching Legend Calls It Quits

by Tom King

This has been an amazing off-season so far for local high school athletic directors. I cant remember another spring off-season when so many coaching vacancies will need to be filled. Just in the last few weeks Wausau West has lost hockey coach Pete Susens and girls BB coach Pat Galligan, East will be replacing football coach Scott Mallien and girls basketball coach Andy Meyer and Merrill needs a new girls hoops coach replacing Melissa Yuska. Now another girls basketball coach is retiring. Tom Weinkauf announced yesterday that he's done at Wausau Newman. Weinkauf had a record of 571-120 in his Hall Of Fame career. He and his teams won six state titles...3 with the Newman girls in 2002,2010 & 2011...and 3 with the Marathon boys in 1975,1976 & 1977. His teams also made many other appearances at state. Most coaches will tell you coaching is coaching but to make the transition this successfully from the boys to the girls game is not as easy as Weinkauf made it look. Obviously he had some great players over the years but his teams, with their tenacious, pressing defense were well-prepared and that is coaching folks. It's going to look very different around the high school sidelines next year.

Shameless plug time....The Wausau American Legion Baseball Raffle is in full swing and I have some other great prizes to tell you about. Mark Parman has donated four tickets for the Badger-Western Illinois football game and WSAU radio has donated some Brewer tickets. So along with the grand prize of $1500 and the second prize of $500 you have chance to win some other great stuff and help support the Wausau Legion baseball team (which I coach). The tickets are $20 each and the drawing will be held on May 11th at the Mothers Day Pancake breakfast at Bunkers (the former Legion) on Wausau's northeast side. If you would like a ticket you can make checks out to Wausau Legion Baseball and send them to me here at 557 Scott Street Wausau, Wi 54403 or drop them off and I will make sure you get a ticket in the drawing. Thank you!

Songs Of The Day (from my I-pod)

Mr. Tanner-Harry Chapin (1974) from his album Short Stories comes one of his more affecting story-songs with Big John Wallace providing the counterpoint voice of "Mr Tanner". Based on a review he read in the New York Times. I saw Chapin at UWSP in the late 70's and it was a shock when he was killed in a traffic crash in 1982

Mrs. Robinson-Simon & Garfunkel (1968) A # 1 hit...a Grammy for record of the year...appeared on the soundtrack of "The Graduate" and the S&G album "Bookends"...and one of the most iconic songs of the 60's...not bad...
