Building A Winning Program

by Tom King

The Wausau East Lumberjack Girls Basketball team hired a new coach on Thursday. A new coach but a familiar name to East hoops fans. Haley Houghton was a stand-out player for the Lumberjacks in the early 2000's and excelled in college for Shirley Egner at UWSP. She takes over a program that hasn't had alot of success. This isn't really a re-building process because you can argue that it hasn't really been built at all. I'm been doing East games for 20 years and I'm pretty sure (I didn't check) that the girls hoops team has never been above :500 in that time. There have been a number of reasons for this but turnovers would be the main one. I think Houghton is a good hire. She's familiar with the situation. She's been through the struggles. She has the energy of the young that will be needed to build the program from the youth level up. I would imagine she is in it for the long haul too. And the cupboard is not bare at the varsity level. Olivia Zipperer and Ellicia Myles are talented juniors this coming season. And three freshman got time on the varsity last year including Naomi Murphy, Lauren Watters and Brenna Urmanski. Urmanski showed down the stretch that she could be a big scoring threat in the coming seasons. Good luck Haley...and I'll talk to you soon.

It looked like the Packers were not going to get any of the players that they targeted in the first round last night. When it finally go to them most of the safeties, linebackers and tight ends that they coveted were gone. But there was one left. Safety Ha'Sean "Ha Ha" Clinton-Dix is expected to slide right into a starting spot. Ted Thompson calls him a "complete" player.

The quarterback picks were interesting. Blake Bortles was the first QB picked by Jacksonville at #3. Both Johnny Manziel and Teddy Bridgewater fell farther than many thought. Manziel to the Browns and Bridgewater to the Vikings. I think both of those guys are going to be very good NFL quarterbacks. These comparisons of Manziel and Tim Tebow are wrong. Manziel will be a much better pro and the teams that passed him up will be kicking themselves.
