It was another great adventure with old school classmates to the Northwoods…this time a visit to the Porcupine Mountains and Lake Of The Clouds…lots of laughs and little sleep…need to get back to work and rest up! Most of us have been friends since 2nd or 3rd grade and this was the fifth year of what I hope will be many more get togethers in the beautiful areas of Northern Wisconsin. We base out of Boulder Junction and let “Camp Counselor “Eggo” set up our travels (since he seems to know every great spot to stop from Minoqua to Lake Superior….camp fires, hikes, beer, wine & Cheeseballs…pool and a blasting jukebox at numerous waterholes….stories old & new, remembering our friend Beth Bliss (an original member of the group who passed away last year) …and no politics! I had never visited the Porcupine Mountains and it was excellent. We stayed north of all the rain and hiked some classic old growth forests with the rushing Little Carp River cascading over rocks and fallen trees. Drove along Lake Superior which was raging and saw evidence of bear and bobcats. Also saw an immature barn owl gnawing on some critter in the middle of the road frozen by our headlights. Stayed there for 10-12 seconds before majestically flying off. They say that “old friends” are the best and I am blessed with many, but this group will always have special place in my heart and soul…may there be many more travels before we sleep
I'm in back…left to right Pam Gessert Dresen, Susie Williamson Garfinkel,Kay Lillie McMahon, Mary Kohl & Myles Kyler…Kurt “Eggo” Eggebrecht taking the picture. Eggo also demonstrated his talent on the Hump-Strom, a Finnish one-man band type instrument to the amusement of many at the Lake Gogebic Inn.
The above bar is Stubbs in Ontanogan Michigan. A classic slice of Yooperville and a must stop if youre in the neighborhood.
What were the Cubs trying to pull on Saturday? Calling a game hours before it was supposed to start and then having the rain stay away. It's obvious the Cubs had some reason to not want to play and the league should investigate. Maybe study a plan to take all rain-out decisions out of the clubs hands and leave it with umpires like it is after a game starts. If nothing else, with this, and Cub coaches' snarky comments about Eric Thames earlier this year, it would seem that a nice Brewers-Cubs rivalry might be building.
Stayed away from politics over the weekend but I did see a picture of Steve Bannon surrounded by keffiyeh clad Saudi Arabians and he couldn't have looked more uncomfortable. The President stood with the Saudi king and princes unironically calling out Iran for limiting free speech and information…visiting one of the most repressive regimes on the planet (and of course where most of the 9-11 terrorists came from)…and also announcing a huge arms sale to the Saudis which he built up as a jobs boom for us.
Songs of The Day
Sweet Lovin-Poco (1972) an amazing track from “A Good Feelin To Know” written about birth of Richie Furays daughter. The stacked harmonies and Rusty Young's steel guitar blend seamlessly.
