Everybody Got Better

by Tom King

The few days after the NFL draft is the time where every team in the NFL believes they have fixed whatever problems have kept them from a deep playoff run. Or kept them from taking that next step to win a Super Bowl. The Packers are no exception. Mike McCarthy said that the Packer defense will be MUCH BETTER...and he told reporters to put that in capital letters. The defense added DL Khyri Thornton, LB carl Bradford and corner back Demetri Goodson to go along with safety HaHa Clinton-Dix who is expected to step right in and start right away. Aaron Rodgers got some new weapons too. WR Davante Adams should step into James Jones spot and TE Richard Rogers gives them some needed depth at that position. They also added a pair of WRs. Jeff Janis was a 7th round pick who is a long-shot but from what I've read is a phenomenal athlete and could stick on special teams or the practice squad. And that leaves Jared Abbrederis. This is a guy that can play in the NFL. Surely as a return man which the Packers need...but don't count him out from being a very serviceable receiver. For a guy that went from an option quarterback at tiny Wautoma high to a walk on at Wisconsin to an All Big Ten receiver...I wouldn't count him out of anything.

A large number of former Badgers are in the NFL now and the Packers will see a number of them including James White when New England comes to Lambeau on November 30th. I like White and Bill Belicek should be able to make the most of his versatile game.

The Brewers took 2 out of 3 from the Yankees this weekend and they did it with K-Rod blowing his first save with 2 outs and two strikes in the 9th on Sunday. Rickie Weeks is trying to prove he belongs in the starting lineup as he had a big weekend. Weeks was asked if he would consider learning to play left field (as Khris Davis continues to struggle). He said no. He believes that he should be starting most games at second base...although most fans would disagree. Scooter Gennett is better defensively than Weeks but has been scuffling at the plate and has little power. The problem is that both players only play second base which leaves the Brewers with less flexibility than most teams. One guy that helps that is Mark Reynolds. He was a great signing for the Crew and continues to contribute all over the place. He'll be playing 3rd base for awhile for the injured Aramis Ramirez and started a nifty double play yesterday...oh and he had the game winning hit in the 9th on an 0-2 count.

It looks like the weather will play havoc with high school sports again this week. I am supposed to have Holmen at Wausau East in baseball tonight but the heavy rains will probably make the field unplayable. East hasn't had a home game yet this year because of the crappy field they have. But that is a subject for another day.

Thanks to all who came out or contributed to the Wausau Legion baseball pancake breakfast and raffle on Sunday. The program couldn't function without you. Our first game in June 13th.
