That headline could cover many different topics these days. But I'm referring to the despair felt by many Packer fans after yesterdays game. Many wanted to give Brett Hundley a chance to practice with the first team before passing judgement on the Packers chances going forward. And it didn't go particularly well. I think it's obvious to most folks now how dependent the Packers were on Rodgers to keep them competitive. Yes football is a team game, probably more than any other, but without Rodgers to make plays, Green Bay is really not competitive against good teams. Mike McCarthy only called 25 passing plays in the game and Jordy Nelson & Davante Adams were never factors. Pair the offensive struggles to the problems on defense and the situation is clear. Even with winnable games coming for the Pack against the likes of Baltimore and Cleveland…the NFC North is now the Vikings to win or lose.
It's a streak that may never be broken…former Badger Joe Thomas had played 10,363 plays over 11 years with the Cleveland Browns without missing a play. Until yesterday when he went down with a tri-cep injury. Think about that. Playing a position where every game guys get hurt by accident when someone rolls up on their leg from behind, Thomas played on and on and on. He's a sure first ballot Hall of Famer and one of the few bright spots for Browns football over the last decade.
The Badgers can only take care of the business they have been given. All the talk about strength of schedule is left to others. All Alex Hornibrook and his teammates can do is put the pressure on the committee by winning the rest of their games. They should handle Illinois and Indiana to move to 9-0 before running into more competitve games with Iowa, Michigan and Minnesota. Can the Badgers compete with Penn State if they make it to the Big Ten title game? Many pundits suggest not…but a top-notch defense like Bucky's should at least give them a chance.
The World Series should be entertaining. The Dodgers have spent a ton to put together this team along with finding some gems in their minor league system as well. Dave Roberts is a good manager who took his team through some big ups and downs this season to get here. Back in 2014 Sporst Illustrated did a cover story on the re-building Houston Astros and the headline read “Your 2017 World Series Champs”. They could be right. The Astros survived a down offensive series for some of their stars but they have the best player in baseball in Jose Altuve and made the most astute trade in aquiring Justin Verlander. Do you realize that the trade for Verlander almost didn't happen? It was finalized with seconds to spare at midnight of the trade deadline.
Jim Paschke called it one of the best wins in Bucks history. If the 3rd game of a season can be called great I would agree. The win over Portland was meaningful in that the team could bounce back after a tough loss and win against a quality opponent after falling behind twice. Giannis should definitely be in the MVP discussion and no, its not too early to say that. He has been the best player in the league so far and I'm not sure its even close. The question is, can the supporting cast do enough to make this the special season that many expect. ESPN the Magazine has a great feature in this weeks edition on how this roster was built and the thinking behind it. The Bucks host Charlotte tonight. You can hear it on Foxsports Radio AM1390 & FM 93.9.
Golden State is supposed to cruise to the title this season. Super team…best ever…yadda, yadda, yadda. They may yet but it has not been a smooth start to the season in Oakland.
Wisconsin is going to play another Friday night football game next year. Barry Alvarez likes the money more than he likes protecting high school football in the state. Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Nebraska and Iowa refuse to play Friday night games. Don't believe his mealy-mouth reasons for doing it…its all about the money…something that Wisconsin could easily turn-down if they wanted to.
Elections have consequences….While Sgt La David Johnson was being laid to rest on Saturday our Commander In Chief took time out from another golfing day to tweet about Hilary Clinton again…….The White House is scrambling to send out letters to the families of fallen service members after Trump lied about being in touch with all of them…..Trump also slipped an executive order under the radar that should give everyone pause. He is now able to recall retired soldiers to duty including as many as 1000 pilots. As one former pilot put it “this probably means war…a big war”…….Trump tweeted over the weekend about a “great book just out” The book is “A Place Called Heaven” by Robert Jeffress and he called Jeffress a “wonderful”man. As Brian Klaas notes “Jeffress has called Catholicism “cult-like”, said Obama was paving the way for the Anti-Christ and said gay people were “filthy”. Just another fine pillar of Trump's world…………For the 3rd time last week the Republicans refused to open hearings into the threat of white supremacist/right-wing terror threats. This came the same week that three right wing wackos shot at protesters at the Richard Spencer speech at the University of Florida and another set off an IED in Willamsburg adding to the burgeoning number of attacks by these folks……..Sean Duffy said last week the the wealthiest folks in the country probably won't get a big break with GOP tax reform. I guess it does depend our your meaning for the word “big” but most anaylsts agree that this would be a lie……
