It Worked Once...Not This Time

by Tom King

When Danny O'Brien transferred from Maryland to Wisconsin to play quarterback I would imagine that many Badger fans had visions of Russell Wilson dancing in their heads. Why not think that O'Brien would be able to do what Wilson did and keep the Badgers playing at a high level? Well, I think we have all seen what a special player Russell Wilson is after his NFL success at such an early age...and the comparisons were never fair. They are two different players and O'Brien just couldnt make the the transition. The Journal-Sentinel is reporting that O'Brien will leave the program after four other Qb's have moved passed him on the depth chart. O'Brien started the 2012 season but was replaced at halftime of the 3rd game. He completed 52-86 passes for 523 yards and three touchdowns.

Right now Curt Phillips is the #1 coming out of spring practice with Joel Stave coming back from injury and youngster Bart Houston and junior college transfer Tanner McEvoy looking to compete come August. Bret Bielema was a believer in using the transfer system and it worked out well with Wilson. With Bielema gone and the O'Brien experiment a failure..it remains to be seen if new coach Gary Andersen would be interested in trying it down the road.

The Brewers have won four in a row after beating Miami last night. Jon Lucroy had four hits and Carlos Gomez is keeping his All-Star game hopes alive with a three hit night. Even Rickie Weeks got into the act with three hits including a home run. Yovanni Gallardo threw 8 innings of shut-out ball and got his 1000th strikeout. Believe it or not, in the last 30 days the Brewer bullpen has the best ERA in the majors.

A slow start for the Wausau Legion Post 10 Bulldogs continued last night with an 8-3 loss to RSW. The Bulldogs allowed 4 unearned runs in the game. We are now 3-3 on the season and head to Wisconsin Rapids on Wednesday night.
