Recognizing Excellence

by Tom King

We've talked in the past about the success of the UW-Stevens Point mens basketball program. This year was no different as the Pointers put together a sparkling season...losing only once and winning their 28th regular season WIAC title and 8th WIAC Tournament championship. They host a first round regional in the NCAA D-3 Tournament this weekend. And they dominated the WIAC awards that were announced on Wednesday.

Bob Semling was named Coach of the Year for the second year in a row and the 4th time in his nine years at Stevens Point. Tyler Tillema was named WIAC Player of the Year. He's the 8th UWSP player to win the award and the first since Jason Kalsow in 2004-05. He stuffed the stat sheet this season...tied for 1st in scoring, 3rd in assists, fifth in steals, fifth in blocks, sixth in fg pct and 7th in minutes played.

Tillema was also named first team All-Conference along with teammates Trevor Hass and Clayton Heuer. Austin Ryf was named to the All-Conference Defensive Team.

You still have a chance to see this bunch do their thing starting on Friday night as they face Marian College at Quandt Fieldhouse.

The Wisconsin Valley Conference also announced their All-Conference teams in boys & girls basketball and hockey on Wednesday.

Boys Basketball first team was Taylor Penn of Wausau West, Luke Zuiker & Matt Oestriech of Marshfield, and Trevor Anderson & Sam Hauser of Stevens Point. Anderson was named Player Of The Year and his dad Scott was named Coach of The Year as the Panthers finished the Valley season unbeaten.
