Its not often that you hear a major league manager go off on an umpire like Brewer skipper Ron Roenicke did last night on home plate umpire Mark Ripperger. The Brewers lost in 10 innings 3-2 as the bullpen coughed up a lead and wasted a good start from Yovanni Gallardo. Francisco Rodriguez gave up the tying homer in the 9th and Zach Duke gave up the game winning hit in the 10th. Roenicke wasnt around to see that after being ejected in the 9th for arguing balls and strikes and what he called Ripperger's "terrible" strike zone. He believed that the zone changed for Rodriguez and after calling pitches off the plate strikes all night he called them balls before K-Rod gave up the tying homer. Roenicke said that Ripperger calls strikes that are not even close...six inches off the plate. Ripperger is a AAA fill in ump and crew chief Ted Barret said after that game that MLB will provide a strike zone report today that he will go over to see if there were pitches missed and how that can be corrected. The liberal strike zone helped the Padre starter Odrisamer Despaigne get a career high nine strikeouts...seven against Braun, Lucroy and Gomez. Obviously Roenicke will be fined but sometimes a fine is worth it to vent and show your team you've got their backs.
As bad as the loss was ...once again the Cardinals couldnt take advantage as they lost to the Pirates. Pittsburgh though is quickly playing themselves back into the race.
The Brewers are off today before starting a weekend series in San Francisco.
Had a great time on the golf course yesterday. The weather was perfect as we teed it up at the Wausau Country Club. I used my new clubs in competition for the first time and hit more good shots than bad. Certainly better than the old sticks. Thanks to John Trucco for the invite.A good time was had by all.
Going to be talking to Wausau East football coach Tom Tourtillot later today. We'll find out about the big win over Rapids last week and preview this week's game at Marshfield. I'll post it as a podcast here on wsau.com. I'll have the game live as the first half of our football doubleheader on Friday night...pre game at 630 and kickoff set for 7pm.
