Sustained Excellence

by Tom King

The San Antonio Spurs dismantled the Miami Heat on Sunday to win their 5th NBA title. Coach Greg Popovich has led a team that quietly goes about its business and just wins baby. In a sports known for it's spectacle, preening & show-boating the Spurs are like a good vanilla custard that while looking bland, just delivers the flavor. It was a victory for team basketball. Miami's Big Three couldnt handle the old-timers of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobli but it was Kawhi Leonard that was the eye-opening surprise in this series. He was named the Series MVP with 3 straight games scoring over 20 back to back double-doubles. The prickly Popovich and the sphinx like Duncan set a record for longest breaks between titles. Will they be able to play at this level next season? Who cares right now...let's just savor what what they were able to accomplish .

The Stanley Cup Finals also came to an end on Friday night with a thrilling double overtime win for the LA Kings. The team was once a bottom dweller in the NHL but with two Cups in the last three years, a great goalie and some of the best players in the league at their positions is it too early to use the word dynasty?

More excellence was shown on the golf course over the weekend. Martin Kaymer tamed Pinehurst #2 and led wire-to wire in winning the US Open. He won his second major by 8 strokes in a dominating performance.

The Brewers head west now with a decison to make. Does Marco Estrada stay in the starting rotation? After a great start to the season he has become a gopher ball machine. It would seem that he should be put in the bullpen for awhile to work on his problems while letting one of the young AAA guys take a few turns. They play in Phoenix tonight.

Congrats to the Mosinee girls softball team as they won the D-2 State Title on Saturday. Also congrats to DC Everest, Rhinelander and Rapids Assumption as they earned trips to state in girls soccer on Saturday.

The Wausau Legion Post 10 Bulldogs have started the season 2-0 with wins over the weekend. They beat Marshfield 4-3 in 10 innings on Friday night. Down 3 -0 in the 8th Post 10 tied it and then Jacob Brandenburg drove in Willy Brand with the winning run in the 10th. Saturday Wausau held off Appleton 3-2 in the first game of a doubleheader and were leading 5-1 in the second game when the rains came.. We play in Marshfield on Tuesday night.
