The Gloom Grows In Milwaukee

by Tom King

Despite a thrilling come from behind extra inning win by the Brewers on Tuesday night, the cloud of despair continues to hover over the team. Like Dogpatch resident Joe Btfsplk it seems this season ahs a perpetual rain cloud following it around. The latest lightning strike came from ESPN yesterday when it reported that MLB is ready to suspend Ryan Braun and over 20 other players for up to 100 games due to their involvement with the Biogenesis Clinic in Miami. The network says that the owner of the clinic, Tony Bosch, is ready to cooperate with MLB investigators and that could blow the lid off any denials from the players involved, especially if he has written evidence stashed away somewhere. Regardless, baseball rules state that they don't even need physical evidence to trigger a suspension. Braun refused to comment on the story after the game last night stating that he had already said all he was going to during spring training...he did say the truth hasnt changed. He claims that his lawyers used the clinic as a witness or an information source for his appeal of the last charge of steroid use against him.

The Brewers are already facing a lost season and are ensconced in last place in the Central and if they would lose Braun any hope for some sort of comeback would be somewhere between none and none. Pitching has been the main problem, but remove Braun's bat from the lineup and this team, as he put it last week, wouldnt just be "barely competitive"...they would be a couple steps above a AAA team.

The Woodchucks stayed hot behind the bats of Matt Tellor and Tyler Steib. The top of the order for the Chucks is raking and the team beat Battle Creek last night 6-5. Tellor has 16 RBI's in the first week of the season and Steib had a couple of more hits last night to continue his hot start in hopes of earning a full year contract. The two teams play again tonight weather permitting at Athletic Park.

One team was able to get both of their sectional baseball games in yesterday despite the weather. Greenwood is heading to state in D-4 after dominating Spring Valley & Prairie Farm. DC Everest was eliminated by Bayport. Mosinee also lost but Pacelli and Rib Lake advanced. Antigo's game was rained out. They will try and play later this afternoon.
