Wang Makes Big Jump

by Tom King

The Milwaukee Brewers head into the season with five first-timers who have never experienced Opening Day in a major league uniform. Now four of them have spent time in the bigs...Jeff Bianchi, Tyler Thornburg & Scooter Gennett with the Brewers and Will Smith with KC...but one is making a huge jump. Wei-Chung Wang has never pitched above Rookie League ball and he will be part of the Brewers bullpen to start the season. He was selected by the Brewers in the Rule Five draft. He's 21 years old and only speaks Mandarin. He is the firtst Taiwanese player in Brewers history and the 11th in Major League history. Ron Roenicke and Doug Melvin believe that he can be a starter down the road although the learning curve is going to be high for player and manager. Roenicke says that something is lost when you have to speak through an interpreter and its harder to contribute to a guys development. He said that Wang is going to have to learn by just going out and pitching and it should be interesting.

The Milwaukee bullpen has been the cause of concern heading into recent seasons but it should be pretty good this year. Smith is going to be really good and Tyler Thornburg, Zach Duke and Wang will solidify the middle of the game leading to K-Rod and Jim Henderson.

The Brewers take on KC tonight and Saturday at Miller Park and Opening Day is Monday vs Atlanta.

How bout those Badgers! The middle of the season slump seems a long way away as they are clicking on all cylinders right now. A good matchup with Arizona looms on Saturday.

The Badger mens hockey team plays tonight as they face North Dakota. You can hear the game on WSAU with the pre-game at 6:30.

In music news...the Doobie Brothers are working on a project with various country artists to record classic Doobie Brothers songs. Mike McDonald has recorded a version of Takin It To The Streets with Love & Theft and What A Fool Believes with Sara Evans. Other country artists include Brad Paisley & Toby Keith . The album will be released later this year.
