Wisconsin Speedskater Lashes Out

by Tom King

We've come a long way from the Heidens and Dan Jannssen and Maria Lamb is not happy about it. Lamb, formally of River Falls, finished last in the 5000m race at the Sochi Olympics on Wednesday and had some choice words for the US speedskating powers that be. She said that most Americaqn speedskaters have performed remarkably well in recent years in spite of the teams leadership and not because of it.

There was hope that the us could win 10 speed-skating medals at these games. They have none now and the individual events are over. Alot of blame has been placed on the new Mach-39 high tech suits that the us competitors are wearing but Lamb has said that is "only the tip of the iceberg". She also ripped former US speedskating director Mark Greenwald for pushing people out and treating others badly. She also said Long-Track performance director Finn Halvorsen "destroyed so many good athletes, at least their perfomance at these games".

The US speed-skating program has a new director in Ted Morris but its too late for this group of athletes. How many will be able to make it back in four years?

I would Imagine like most of these brouhaha's there is alot of blame to go around...including the fact that maybe the US skaters just are not talented enough to compete with the Dutch and some of the other world powers. It wont be the first time or the last that a sport goes through a down time in talent level...add that to bad coaching and bad technology and you get results like we've seen the last two weeks.

The NBA trade deadline is today and the Bucks could be players. Gary Neal, Luke Ridnour and CAron Butler are all names being mentioned. The Bucks host Denver tonight.

Weather permitting there will be high school hockey and hoops tonight. The hockey tournament continues for the boys and starts for the girls. Boys games include Lakeland at Wausau West, Rhinelander at Northland Pines, Pacelli at Antigo and Black River Falls at Wisconsin Rapids. Girls games include the CW Storm hosting Medford at Greenheck.
