WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) – As plans to build a copy of Wausau's Peace Monument in Egypt start to come together, the city is looking for a partner.
Mayor Jim Tipple says the city will be starting the process to link up with a sister city in Egypt to host the other copy of the Peace Statue. At the unveiling ceremony last week, creator Mustafa Saleh called the statue a 'bridge to peace'. Tipple says it's his hope that just the act of finding a partner will help bring a bit of diplomacy to Wausau.
Richard Riley from the State Department and Mahmoud Amer from the Egyptian Consulate talked about the importance of local diplomacy and how it's interactions like this that can lead to peace; not just on a strategic or national scale, but person to person through the exchange programs and the support of people like Saleh.
Saleh says he hopes to have a copy built in Cairo, but it's unclear if Wausau will find another city to partner with.
