MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) – The state Assembly has unanimously passed a package of tougher drunken driving penalties.
The changes make a fourth OWI offense a felony, criminalizes a first offense if a child younger than 16 is in the vehicle, expands treatment programs and requires ignition interlocks for repeat offenders.
“For the 3,164 convictions and 24 deaths in my district in the last four years – it shows we have a problem,” said Representative Louis Molepske (D-Stevens Point).
The measure now goes to the state Senate.
