WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) – Wausau’s current garbage hauler may keep the contract for another five years.
Schofield-based Veolia submitted what appeared to be the lowest proposal Monday at $8.27 million dollars. Veolia has the option of trucking the garbage to the Marathon County landfill – an option city leaders say they’ll exercise.
The City Council, acting as a committee of the whole, will award the contract in closed session Tuesday at 6 p.m. It will ratify the decision in its regular meeting at 7 p.m.
The city re-opened its garbage contract this month after Rhinelander-based Northern Waste wanted to change the terms and raise its original price before signing the deal.
Northern Waste was the second lowest bidder, coming in with a five-year proposal at $8.37 million.
One other option the city could consider is awarding the contract to Texas-based U.S. Waste. Though it wasn’t the lowest bidder, the company turned in a proposal that would make the city pay the landfill tipping fee.
