MENDRISIO, Switzerland (Reuters) - Olympic champion Fabian Cancellera of Switzerland destroyed the field to win the time trial at the road world cycling championships for the third time on Thursday.
The Swiss rider finished the 49.8-kilometre course in 57 minutes 55 seconds, nearly one-and-a-half minutes ahead of his nearest rival Gustav Larsson of Sweden.
The 28-year-old had opened up a lead of 38 seconds after the first third of the course. Shortly afterwards, he overtook Larsson, the previous rider, who had started one minute ahead of him.
By the halfway mark, Cancellara was more than a minute clear of Larsson.
