WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) – Wausau police have arrested a 21-year-old man suspected of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman early Wednesday on the city’s west side.
James Begay is accused of claiming to have a knife when he attacked the woman in the 700 block of Werle Avenue around 4 a.m. The woman had gone outside to care for a pet.
The victim was taken to the hospital, treated and released.
Police arrested Begay hours after the assault, deputy Chief Bryan Hilts said. Police believe Begay was visiting a friend in the neighborhood and had not met the victim though they may have seen each other.
Begay, who was convicted of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old child in Sawyer County in October 2005, had cut off his ankle bracelet, police say.
Begay remains jailed on a probation hold. Police have referred him to the Marathon County district attorney’s office on one count of first-degree sexual assault. He could be charged Friday.
