WAUSAU, Wis (WSAU) Wausau’s Parks and Recreation Committee is discussing what the 400-block downtown should be called. The block has never had a formal name. It’s sometimes referred to as Artsblock. A construction sign nearby calls it City Square, although city officials say that’s not an official name.
There had also been a petition drive suggesting the name Freedom Square. Other names have been proposed as well.
City officials say since private fundraising and donations are helping to pay for renovation work, they’d like the public to be involved in the naming process. The Parks & Rec committee is considering taking naming ideas from the public and putting them up for a public vote. That plan would need city council approval.
Renovation work on the 400-block is done for the winter. It will resume in the spring, and should be finished in June for the summer’s outdoor season.
