WAUSAU, Wis (WSAU) The City of Wausau is considering a deep cut in funding to the Greater Wausau Convention and Visitors Bureau. The group may receive $35-thousand dollars less in the upcoming year.
The city funds the C-V-B through money received from the 8-percent hotel rooms tax. That money is expected to be less this year. In 2009, the group received 215-thousand dollars from the city. City finance committee members say that amount could be reduced to 180-thousand.
The Convention and Visitors Bureau announced last year it would stop funding the Badger State winter games in Central Wisconsin. They objected to some events being held outside the area. The city says if the games move elsewhere, there would be fewer hotel stays.
There is also intense competition for hotel rooms tax funding among other community groups that hold events targeting out-of-town visitors.
