WAUSAU, Wis (WSAU) The Wausau School Board is giving teachers two more weeks to consider early retirement options. The deadline was extended to February 16th.
The school district says it needs a minimum of 27 teachers to retire to avoid layoffs before the start of the next school year. The district hasn't said how many teachers have already decided to retire early.
One reason for extending the deadline: the school district wants more time to develop a low-cost health insurance plan for retirees. They say bringing down the cost of health care would increase the number of teachers who retire early.
Next year's school budget had been criticized by the teachers union for depending on large numbers of retirements to be in balance. It was cited as one of the reasons for a no-confidence vote in superintendent Steve Murley.
