WASHINGTON COUNTY, Wis. (WTAQ) - A suburban Milwaukee man now claims he was insane when he allegedly killed his stepson. 37-year-old Charles Avey Sr. of Grafton pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease Wednesday to his Washington County charges of homicide and bail jumping. He’s accused of strangling 14-year-old Cody Reetz with a neck tie last November, and leaving him in a vehicle at a Walmart parking lot in Germantown.
Authorities said Avey apparently did it to get back at his wife, for going to the police a week after he allegedly beat her head with a hammer. Ozaukee County prosecutors say they’ll charge Avey with the beating as soon as his Washington County case is settled.
