WASHINGTON COUNTY, Wis. (WTAQ) - A Grafton man will find out Wednesday if he’ll be ordered to stand trial for killing his stepson to get back at his wife. 37-year-old Charles Avey has a preliminary hearing set for 9 a.m. in Washington County Circuit Court. Prosecutors said Avey strangled 14-year-old Cody Reetz with a necktie on November 8th, and left him in a vehicle in a store’s parking lot in Germantown. That was just a few hours after Avey’s wife Trista went to the police to complain that he struck her head and arms numerous times with a hammer the week before. Prosecutors said she silently lived through 4 years of her husband’s abuse – and her mother finally convinced her to tell authorities about it. Avey is in jail under a $750,000 bond. He’s charged in Washington County with homicide and bail jumping. He was later charged in Ozaukee County with battery and domestic abuse – but that case won’t be heard until his homicide case is over.
