KALISPELL, Mont. (WTAQ) - The wreckage of a missing plane containing a Beloit native and 3 others was found Wednesday on a hillside in northwest Montana.
27-year-old Erika Hoefer joined a female co-worker and 2 men on a sightseeing trip Sunday afternoon – and they never returned.
A U.S. Homeland Security helicopter found the missing single-engine craft Wednesday afternoon in a heavily-wooded hillside about 80 miles south of Kalispell Montana. That’s where Hoefer worked as a business reporter for the Daily Inter Lake newspaper.
She had worked at the Beloit Daily News before moving to Montana last December. The crash site was not far from where the plane was last spotted. The National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA will investigate the cause of the crash.
Meanwhile, authorities have not been able to remove the bodies from the wreckage. They could not use a helicopter basket because of the rough terrain – so they plan on hiking to the site Thursday.
