The Tigers good play at home this season hit a bump in the road over the Memorial Day weekend as Oakland took three out of four from Detroit, including yesterday’s 4-to-1 victory for the A’s at Comerica Park. The start of the game was delayed for two hours, 42 minutes due to rain.
Justin Verlander allowed three runs on six hits over seven innings to fall to 5-and-4. It didn’t help that the middle of the Tiger’s lineup, hitters 3, 4, and 5 came up empty with Magglio Ordonez, Miguel Cabrera and Johnny Damon going a combined 0-for-12 on the day.
Oakland starter Trevor Cahill improved to 4-and-2 after tossing six-and-a-third innings of five-hit, one-run ball. Detroit continues its home stand tonight with the opener of a 3-game series against Cleveland. Yesterday’s loss to Oakland drops the Tigers to 4-and-a-half games behind the Central Division leading Twins, who won their fifth straight yesterday with a 5-to-4 victory at Seattle. The White Sox were idle yesterday while the Cubs lost 2-to-1 at Pittsburgh.
