WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) – Wausau school board members will hear tonight how much more they have to cut to balance next year’s budget.
Administrators wanted 27 teachers to voluntarily retire at the end of the year but only 18 did. Among them is teacher’s union president Mary Jarvis, who is calling it quits after 34 years of service.
The district originally faced a $3 million shortfall. But Superintendent Steve Murley said that deficit has been pared down to about $200,000 with about $800,000 in cuts made, the voluntary retirements and the resignations of three full-time equivalent staff members.
The school board’s operations committee will get a budget update at 6 p.m. at G.D. Jones elementary school. The committee will recommend budget cuts for board approval on April 12th.
